Montgomery was its own town until Calgary annexed it in 1963. You can still tell. It has its own main drag on Bowness Road, the Bow River wraps the south and west sides, and Shaganappi Trail and Market Mall close off the rest.
The housing is a mix of postwar bungalows, newer infills and some small apartment buildings. About a third of homes are rented. Junk pickup in Montgomery covers all of that, from a tenant's move-out mattress to the leftovers of an infill build. Leave it in the alley, the driveway or at the curb by 8 am on Tuesday or Friday, and you don't have to be home.
Where to leave it in Montgomery
Most older lots have a back lane with a detached garage. That lane is the best spot. Keep things tight to your fence or garage so they don't block anyone backing out.
If you're near Bowness Road, skip the front curb. Traffic and parking there make it harder to stop than the lane.
For low-rise apartments, use the lane or a surface parking stall, not the building entrance. Check the rules with your landlord or manager.
What people get rid of in Montgomery
With old bungalows coming down and new houses going up, there's a steady stream of stuff that needs a new home or the dump:
- Basement furniture from a bungalow that's about to be demolished
- Old washers and dryers pulled out for new ones
- Bikes, canoe paddles and camping gear that's done
- A tenant's leftover mattress and bed frame
Bigger things like a canoe itself won't fit a 6.5 ft bed. Ask before booking anything over about seven feet long.
